The Legend of the Swan: A Tale of Love and Miracles
One of the most enchanting stories associated with Wolverley Court is the Legend of the Swan. This medieval tale has captured imaginations for centuries and adds a touch of magic to our care home’s heritage.
The Crusader’s Return
The legend tells of Sir John Attwood, a brave knight who left his beloved wife to join the Crusades. Years passed without word, and Lady Attwood, believing her husband had perished, reluctantly prepared to remarry. However, fate had other plans.
On the very morning of her intended wedding, a remarkable event unfolded. A milkmaid, accompanied by the family dog, discovered a strange figure in a nearby meadow. The man was in a pitiful state – emaciated, unkempt, and bound in chains. Despite his appearance, the old dog seemed to recognise him, whimpering and wagging its tail.
Lady Attwood was summoned, and upon seeing the mysterious figure, she was astonished to find it was indeed her long-lost husband. Sir John proved his identity by producing his half of a ring they had split as a token of their love before his departure.
A Miraculous Journey
Sir John’s tale of return was nothing short of miraculous. He recounted being held captive in a Saracen dungeon for years. In his darkest hour, he prayed fervently to the Virgin Mary for deliverance. That very night, he found himself transported across vast distances, awakening in the familiar meadows of Wolverley.
To this day, this meadow is known as The Knight’s Meadow, a living reminder of this incredible tale. At Wolverley Court, the iron manacles said to have once bound the knight are still preserved and displayed, connecting us to this remarkable story.
While some versions of the legend speak of angelic intervention, Sir John, in his modesty, attributed his incredible journey to a swan. This humble claim gave rise to the swan crest adopted by several branches of the Attwood family, a symbol that has endured through the centuries.
A Lasting Legacy
In St. John the Baptist Church in Wolverley, visitors can find fragments of an alabaster effigy believed to represent the Crusader knight. The head, body, and feet of this medieval sculpture serve as a poignant tribute to his bravery and miraculous return. These artefacts are not just relics; they are pieces of living history that continue to inspire awe.

Archaeological Discoveries: Unearthing Wolverley's Past
While legends provide a colourful backdrop to our local history, recent archaeological findings have shed light on the area’s rich past. In June 2022, a community excavation project called “Small Pits, Big Ideas” was conducted across Wolverley, offering fascinating insights into the village’s development over time.
Medieval Settlements
The excavations revealed evidence of medieval activity across several test pits in the village. Notably, a cluster of test pits near the junction of Drakelow Lane and Blakeshall Lane yielded significant findings. At Rock Hill, archaeologists discovered a wide range of medieval pottery and glazed ridge tiles dating from the 13th to 16th centuries. These findings suggest the presence of a substantial or specialised building, possibly a manor house, as tiled roofs were uncommon in rural settlements during this period.
Local Pottery Production
One of the most intriguing discoveries was a notable quantity of locally produced medieval pottery. This find is particularly significant as it had not been widely recorded or researched before, offering new insights into local craftsmanship and trade during the medieval period.
Wolverley Court’s Historical Significance
Our very own Wolverley Court played a role in these archaeological investigations. Test Pit 13, located on the grounds of Wolverley Court, yielded fascinating results. Finds included:
- A rare sherd of Roman pottery
- Medieval roof tiles likely dating from the 13th to 16th centuries
- Several sherds of medieval pottery, including a rim sherd from the mid-12th to early-14th century
These discoveries confirm that there has been continuous activity at or near Wolverley Court from the medieval period onwards, adding depth to our home’s rich history.
