The Attwood Family

A Legacy of Care at Wolverley Court

We are proud to call the historic Wolverley Court our home. This magnificent building, steeped in centuries of history, provides a unique and inspiring setting for our residential care home. The story of Wolverley Court is inextricably linked with the illustrious Attwood family, whose legacy we honour and continue in our commitment to exceptional care.

A Noble Heritage

The Attwood family’s connection to Wolverley dates back to the reign of Edward III (1327-1377). For centuries, they were prominent figures in Worcestershire, serving as Knights of the Shire and leaving an indelible mark on the region’s history.

Political Influence

The Attwoods of Wolverley played a significant role in English politics. Robert Attwood sat in three of Edward III’s Parliaments, representing Worcestershire. This tradition of public service continued through generations, with John Attwood serving as a Chevalier (knight) in later parliaments.

The Legend of the Crusader

One of the most captivating stories associated with the Attwood family is the legend of Sir John Attwood, a Crusader knight. According to local lore, Sir John was captured during the Crusades and held in a Saracen dungeon. After years of captivity, he made a vow to the Virgin Mary, promising to donate a large portion of his lands to the Church of Worcester if he were freed.

Miraculously, Sir John was liberated and found himself back in Wolverley, just in time to prevent his wife’s remarriage. This romantic tale has become an integral part of Wolverley’s folklore and speaks to the family’s deep connection to the area.

Tangible Reminders

Today, visitors to Wolverley Court can still see tangible reminders of this legend:

  • The meadow below Wolverley Court is known as “the Knights Meadow”
  • Iron manacles, said to have been worn by the knight, are preserved at Wolverley Court
  • In the conservatory, you can find the remains of an alabaster effigy of a 14th-century Attwood family member, believed by many to be Sir John Attwood himself

Wolverley Court: A Home with History

Wolverley Court, the ancestral seat of the Attwood family, has a rich architectural history that spans centuries.

Early Beginnings

The earliest parts of Wolverley Court date back to the late 16th century, with stone mullioned windows still visible in the south-east corner of the building.

Georgian Splendour

In the early 19th century, Wolverley Court underwent significant renovations, transforming it into the elegant Georgian mansion we see today. This renovation preserved the building’s historical character while adapting it for more modern living.

The Attwood Legacy

The Attwood family’s influence extended far beyond Wolverley. They were known for their:

  • Extensive Landholdings: The family-owned considerable estates in Kidderminster, Rushock, Nordwyke, Worcester, and other parts of the country.
  • Charitable Works: One of the Attwoods founded the Chantry of Trimpley, demonstrating the family’s commitment to their community.
  • Heraldic Pride: The family’s coat of arms, featuring a lion rampant seizing a conquered dragon, later evolved to include a double-tailed lion, symbolising increased strength and influence.
